Leash Use in the City: Safety, Law, and Well-being
The Leash in the City: Safety, Law, and Well-being
For those who live in the city with a small dog, the leash is not just a "string" that connects us to them, but a real communication tool. Choosing the right one means protecting your dog from a thousand invisible dangers and making walks a relaxing, stress-free experience.
What does Italian law say?
It's important to know that by law, in public places and places open to the public, the leash must not exceed 1.50 meters in length. This is not an unnecessary restriction, but a fundamental safety measure for controlling the dog in the presence of:
- Heavy traffic and maneuvering cars.
- Children or people who might be afraid of dogs.
- Bicycles, scooters, or other dogs that might cross your path.
A leash that is too long in the city drastically reduces your reaction time: those extra moments needed to "call" your dog back to you can make all the difference in case of danger.
The ideal length: why I recommend 1.50 meters?
In my grooming experience, I find that for toy and small dogs, a length of 1.50 meters is the perfect balance between freedom and control.
- Controlled freedom: The dog has enough space to explore without wandering too far.
- Immediate safety: It allows you to keep them close to you when crossing roads or in crowded areas in a fluid way.
- No jerking: A fixed leash avoids the "spring" effect that confuses the dog and creates unnecessary tension on their neck.
Why choose the Lightweight Rope?
For my line, I have exclusively chosen rope: a material that combines elegance and practicality.
- Extreme lightness: For a poodle or a Maltese, every gram counts. The rope doesn't "weigh" on their structure, making walking natural.
- Maximum resistance: Despite being lightweight, rope is incredibly robust and safe, designed to last.
- Comfort for you: It's pleasant to hold, doesn't "cut" your hands, and offers a firm yet soft grip.
- Proportionate snap hooks: On such a technical leash, I only use small snap hooks that don't bang against the dog's neck, respecting their balance.
The "Flexi" chapter: why avoid it in traffic?
Retractable leashes seem practical, but the mechanism can break, and the thin cord can cause abrasions if it gets tangled around passersby's legs. For the city, the stability and safety of a fixed rope leash are incomparable.
Conclusion
The right leash should be an invisible bridge between you and your dog. Choosing a rope leash, respecting legal requirements and your friend's size, is the first step towards a safe and happy walk.
Because every outing should be a special moment, carefully crafted in every detail... always with bows.
